About this work
Several nude figures, their bodies close together in a tight embrace, are joined by large feathered wings that fan out behind and around them. Loose feathers drift through the dark air and scatter across rippling water at their bare feet, while faint pinpoints of light dot the black background like distant stars.
Warm flesh tones and cream-white plumage stand out sharply against an almost pure black ground, built up with loose, energetic strokes that turn the wings into thick ridges of paint. The tighter, smoother handling of the bodies contrasts with the broken, feathery texture of the wings, giving the huddled group a hushed, mysterious intensity.
